In this time the most used and most popular Search Engine is Google. It has acquired worldwide recognition and everyone is trying to design their websites in accordance with Google as everyone wants their website to be on the top of the list for a search. Constantly Google is making its algorithms better to find out sites with more keyword relevance. There are many small factors that are taken into account for faster ranking like website speed. Though it is a small factor for affecting the page rank, still it makes a difference with the position of your site.

Website speed doesn’t affect the page rank big time but it influences nonetheless. They are related but some low ranking pages may load faster than the high ranked pages. It depends on which way you are measuring the site speed like if you are measuring the time the first byte is loaded then it’s a big factor as sites that have their first byte loaded faster are ranked higher in Google. Another measure is the time to load the full page but this actually doesn’t matter very much in Google. The reviews suggest that less than one percent effects the ranking in terms of website speed. Google has said that website speed matters but by how much effectiveness is not mentioned. But if your site is slow, users will not use it more frequently so it is not for google or any other search engine but for the user benefits that your website should be fast. What if your site is so slow that the user has to wait 10+ seconds to view the content in your page? He or she will be gone long ago before your page is even loading.

Things to do for improving website speed

Website speed is an important thing for user experience so the 1st step is to measure the site speed otherwise how will one know that their site is slow.

Measuring load times: To measure load times you need a good tool to check the site speed and there are many tools that are good such as Google Analytics Site Speed which is reported to give a very good idea of the performance of your site. Pingdom Page Load Time is another tool. WebPageTest is an advanced tool as it tests your website in different browsers and shows the slow spots in your website. These tools may take more time to show you the results but be patient as they give detailed information about your site like user time, percentage of images, first byte, time to load fully, JavaScript files, html etc. and this information will be useful later when you will be fixing the problems with your site.

Faster Server: Server speed is a major problem and the most obvious reason that a site is slow is that the server you are hosting your website has slow speed. The reasons may be different in different cases like web hosting capacity does not have the capacity to offer such server speed or the type of your hosting website account. The easy way out is to upgrade your account. If you have a website with many pages and it needs a lot of database reads and writes, then no provider on earth can give you the speed you need for your website to be fast. In this case you can’t have a shared account and need to change it to VPS (Virtual Private Server) or dedicated servers. These account are expensive than the shared account but if your site is fetching you the money you need then to maintain the steady income you need to shift to a better account. Another problem may be the web hosting provider is not good and so upgrading your account will also won’t so and so you need to shift to a good web hosting provider.

Optimization: May be your servers are fast but your site is slow so you will still face speed issues. Your images and codes need to be optimized so that they load faster. In case of images you can shorter the size or compress.
